Vida (2021)
Instrumentation: Solo piano
Duration: ca. 12 mins
Premiere: George Fu @ The Angela Burgess Recital Hall, Royal Academy of Music (4th February 2022). This work is one of a collection of 200 solo pieces commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of the Royal Academy of Music in 2022.
Vida is a fantasia-like work in three movements, based on a selection of Medieval melodies composed by the trobadours and trobairitz. Vida was written alongside my suite Alternative views from history (for a mixed ensemble of period and modern instruments). As such, Vida felt like a testing ground in which I set out to explore how I might frame and distort these ancient materials in my own musical language.
